Craigslist Find: Unrestored, Highly Documented And Low Mileage 1964 Pontiac Catalina, With Dealer-Installed Tri-Power

“It’s only original once”, the survivor guys like to say, and it’s true. While restored cars are pretty to look at, they had to have work done to bring them back from years of abuse and use, and many times it’s a visual makeover. The dream is to find a low-mileage car that had been well taken care of, the one that wasn’t beat on, the one that was owned by a fastidious person who tracked every detail, every oil change, and kept records. And if you ever came across one of those cars, you’d dump the bank account in seconds to own it, wouldn’t you?

Pontiac guys, you might wanna sit down for this one.

The beauty you are seeing is a o 1964 Pontiac Catalina. This baby blue two-door has quite an impressive list of reasons to own it, but let’s cover a few highlights. First, it’s never, ever been restored. Nothing. The power package? 389 with a dealer-installed Tri-Power setup, backed by a four speed. The original four-barrel and manifold are with the car, and they look as fresh as the day they came off of the car. The interior is the tri-blue pattern and appears flawless, and as for the mileage?

An odometer with 79,000 or so miles on the clock. For a car that’s 51 years old, that’s just over 1,500 miles a year. The likelihood of finding another car in this kind of preserved condition at this age is slim to near-nil and is only getting rarer. The price is up there at $29,995 but restored examples are trading at or above that cost. And knowing all of the story of the car with the proof to back it up simply can’t be bought.

440 6pac, I visit Bangshift every day, but seldom comment. However, I see you popping up everywhere as apparently you have a negative observation on virtually every topic. Your snotty comment about this 64 Pontiac not being worth the asking price is the kind of infantile brand bashing that should have died in the 60’s. You and those who share your philosophy, are shooting this hobby in the foot by not supporting all brands and all hobbyists/enthusiasts etc. regardless of what they build, buy, or sell. I wouldn’t doubt that some people leave the hobby because of the build or brand bashing that goes on. Can you please bloody well move on from using this as your bitch forum to help you feel better about yourself, and start to see the good in the hobby, regardless of brand? The anti-car government agencies and crybaby special interest groups who are set on destroying our beloved hobby can rest comfortably knowing there are people within the car culture itself who are bent on dividing and creating bad feelings. The writing is on the wall for all of us if this sort of surly commenting doesn’t end and we present ourselves as one unified group. So, 440 6pac, would you please give some thought to your impulsively critical comments before hitting your keyboard and reflect on the potential damage you are doing to the hobby you supposedly enjoy.

I find it interesting that GM guys can bash other makes and that’s OK. But when the table gets turned y’all start crying. When y’all quit bashing non GM products, on and off line, I’ll quit bashing GM products.

        1. tigeraid

The only bashing we ever seem to see on BS is from Mopar owners who constantly have to respond to every single post regarding a GM product with bile and hate. It’s immature bullshit. Grow up.

$29,995 is too much for this car even with it’s originality. No bucket seats. No console. No wheel covers or 8 Lug Wheels, just hubcaps.

    IMO, should be $19,995.

    440 6pac.

You will not find on this forum, or most others, a more hardcore Mopar lover than I. I currently own 7 ranging from a 62 Valiant to a 86 Shelby Charger. There are also 2 B bodies, 2 A bodies and 1 E body in my stable.

That being said, if you cannot find something to like about other brands then I would agree with Gavin. Unsubstantiated bashing just for the sake of bashing is only showing that you have a lot to learn about this hobby/obsession of ours.

As an aside, I notice you refrained from commenting on that awful custom job on the old Dart. By your silence, I’m guessing you must approve of what was done to it. If so, that tells me all I need to know.

    1. 440 6Pac

I looked for the Dart your talking about. I just looked at the picture and thought it was a Firebird. I didn’t comment because of that. But that is a POS alright.

I ain’t going to sit here and pretend I like cars that I have absolutely no use for.
The fact is I have never liked Pontiacs and Chevys and I never will. For me to pretend otherwise makes me a hypocrite. If others want to be hypocrites that it’s OK with me. I’m not going there.
If folks want to like Chevys and Pontiacs that’s OK with me. Just don’t expect me to drool over them like they’re the best things to come down the pike because I ain’t gonna.
I’m also gonna to exercise my God given right of freedom of expression. If anyone doesn’t like that, it’s their problem. Not mine.

Are you and GuitarSlinger the same person?

      If not, you’re both a**holes.

Hey its “my God given right of freedom of expression”.

I would like to add my two-cent’s worth to this discussion. I have long held the opinion that every make and model is worth something to someone. Otherwise there would be a bunch of brand new vehicles sitting on a manufacturer’s back lot, somewhere. Personally, I am a MOPAR diehard, but I can appreciate any brand’s product, whether it is, for example, a Mustang, GTO, or Charger. No one says that anyone has to like every car that was ever made, but just because one has a preference, that is no reason to denigrate someone else’s pride and joy. The same goes for those jerks who consider someone who drives an Italian sports car, or lifted pickup, as having a lack of “manhood”. As Tom and Gavin said, if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing.
Now, as to the Pontiac in question. Before I read any of the comments, I thought $30,000 was an acceptable price for this car. No, rarity does not always mean valuable, but there were lots of plain Jane muscle cars produced back in the day. To me, that fact, as well as this vehicle being completely unrestored, justifies the price.

    3. tigeraid

We really, really, REALLY don’t care what cars you don’t like. Especially when the dislike is completely irrational. Provide something useful to the discussion, or leave.

Never have seen a mopar my Pontiac couldn’t couldn’t walk away from …
    He probably really owns a 2.2 k-car.

  5. MK2GTUS

OK I think we have gotten off subject….To get back on subject..This car is worth every bit of the asking price…it was said because it doesn’t have any options it only worth 19k.well not having the option like bucket seats AC etc.. means this car was ordered with no options but a 389 a 4 speed and thats it..most of these cars had a few options but to see a “stripper”model is VERY rare…they were mostly for race duty back then…ok just my 2 cents…I have owned evey make and model of car you can think of..I am 46 and I have owned over 100 cars…who cares about ‘Brand”loyality..Build what you want and respect what others build..even if you don’t like it…its called RESPECT..!!!

    Thank You
    That is All
