I’m pretty sure that if I ever jump ship from my current Chrysler situation, I’d move towards an F-body. I’m just not sure which one I’d own. I’d like a 1974-77 Camaro for the nostalgia alone -first car I fell in love with, first car that was mine – but I’d love to actually put one together to make up for the plans that never materialized for that car. But have you priced a decent second-gen Camaro lately? Their values are climbing. So the other option on the table would be a third-gen Pontiac Firebird: aerodynamically slick, hidden headlights, and still plenty of ways to make one fun. There’s also a nostalgia kick to the Firebird for me here, too: my paternal grandmother rocked one in the mid-1980s.
Seeing this black 1986 on Cragars gave me one other wisp of the past to think about. Do you remember those plastic Tootsietoy cars that always had white-lettered tires and Cragar wheels? This one looks so much like one of those toys that I can’t stand it. I could work the mechanicals all day long and not feel guilty, but I couldn’t bring myself to change that look any. Clean everything up, swap in the 140 MPH gauge cluster if it isn’t already in there, and I would road-trip that sucker from Washington all the way back to Kentucky with the T-tops out. $4,000? Yes, sir.
A factory no-A/C third gen F-body? How often do you see those?
Bryan – perhaps you should pen an article on third generation F bodies detailing how and why the roof top cracks on ALL of them. And how to add the x braces and side bars to stiffen the unibody & try to delay it.
As a previous owner of two birds, prospective buyers be aware !
one good pothole and a month later there is discoloration in the door glass corner ….
You fuchin’ betcha! Cragars ROCK!
T-tops yuck! Give me a solid roof everytime.
