Rough Start: Stupidly Cheap Fun In…New Hampshire? What? Read On…

Staying in the Northeast, I decided to make a short hop over to New Hampshire to see what is available on that little strip of a state. I have nothing against New Hampshire at all, I’m just saying that the state itself is smaller than some counties that I’ve lived in, and I’ve had longer commutes than that state is wide.

Today’s find is a Subaru Legacy wagon, one that has a surefire tin worm infection. Bear with me for a moment, I know it’s not looking good. Entry price is $500, which for a running, driving car, is just fine. For that you get the Boxer-four and a five-speed manual transmission. That flat-four is the same setup as a WRX’s. And the car can be lifted some. Nevermind the damage…anyone picturing a do-anything rally wagon yet? I am…good all-terrains, turbo motor, and enough space inside to do whatever. With $4500 left over to mod it, I’d rig up tube bumpers front and rear, fog lights, the motor/trans swap, wheels and tires, and any other color than white. Nothing like a former soccer-mom mobile gone post-apocalyptic.

Yeah, that’s MUCH better.

You can see the Outback’s Craigslist ad here, as long as it lasts.

All hail the Rally Beater! Where should I look next? Suggestions welcome!

Yes, yes and yes. I had a similar image for my $1100 Subaru Loyale wagon. But extensive rust and the awful 3-speed auto trans made me just use it as a daily driver.

All F’ing kinds of yes! Everything on the cheap. Ebay coil overs, used A/T tires, Straight pipe it, weld up some pre runner bumpers, add some rally lights and beat it like a rented mule till is dies.
