Rough Start: The Kid Doesn’t Like This 1985 Pontiac Grand Prix…Her Loss, Your Gain!

Rough Start: The Kid Doesn’t Like This 1985 Pontiac Grand Prix…Her Loss, Your Gain!

I call it like I see it: teenage girls are picky little things, aren’t they? The 1981 Mirada I owned a few years back? Was a car the parents were going to give to their teenage daughter. She hated it, I scored it for a few hundred bucks. Another one shot down a very clean shortbed GM pickup that was only a couple years old and a cam/valvespring upgrade away from being a street sweeper of a truck pass it along for a crossover. And apparently, that’s the story with this cucumber-colored 1985 Pontiac Grand Prix…the folks bought the car for the daughter and she doesn’t like it. Anyone feel like a G-body deal? Read on…

The colors are interesting, but I think that a good polishing of the paint and it might grow on me. Maybe not, but the GP does look unmolested and wearing surprisingly little age for an Ohio-sourced car. The ad says V8, so expect the 150 horsepower version of the 305 Chevrolet. Not the happiest engine to have, but even the 305 can be built up into something respectable. The Rally wheels are a very nice find, and outside of the typical droopy headliner, a missing radio and faceplate, and what looks to be missing rear window trim, the GP looks very savable. 68,000 miles seem to be dead on the money here. And added bonus: it’s a full gauge package car, tachometer and all.

Four thousand bones or a good motorcycle (that isn’t a crotch-rocket) takes the car home. Fix the headliner and drive it until you can start having fun with the running gear or the suspension setup! These Pontiacs always get left behind for Cutlasses, Monte Carlos and black Buicks. It’d be a shame to leave this one behind, too.

Ohio, I’ll bet you 10 to 1 the rear frame rails are rotted. No matter how many miles are on it. Common failure on these and Cutlass’s in the salt belt.

Why shucks Pop – I keep the Gran Prix & give her whatever piece you’re driving…..

I’d be surprised if that sits long before a buyer shows up. G-body prices seem to be inching higher as more people realize what a great platform they are and supply continues to go away. I have an 81 GP with exactly the same color combo. The 305 has moved on and a 6.0 LS with a few mods occupies that space. With the suspension parts ive added the car is a real smile generator.
