Rust And Rarity: This 1970 IH Travelette Is A Project That Needs Finished!

Rust And Rarity: This 1970 IH Travelette Is A Project That Needs Finished!

I’m always a fan of the oddball project vehicle. Always have been, always will be. I don’t see much wrong in staying mainstream, but there’s always one common complaint: when you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all. Pick your personal favorite, it applies. Sure, the odd vehicle is going to be difficult, and sure, there are days where you might end up grinding your teeth to dust, but go to a race or a show and you tell me which vehicle is getting the most attention. It’s the one that you don’t find everyday, the one that earns a rash of “I haven’t seen one of these in forever…” stories, the one that leaves people asking questions.

On the surface, you’re looking at a 1970 International Harvester Travelette. Effectively, it’s a Light Line crew-cab stepside, a body style not commonly seen on pickup trucks in general before 1988. With IH pickups, there’s a number indicating what the weight rating meant, but here, that’s not worth mentioning, as the majority of the truck is late-model two-wheel-drive Chevrolet Silverado, complete with a 5.3L wearing 6.0L heads, side-exit pipes, all of the frame and suspension, ready to rock. There’s items that need some attention, like the side windows that need to be converted to power operation, some wiring that needs to be sorted, and some final sorting for windshield wipers. But the truck runs, and with some work you’d have a ready-to-daily International Harvester that can do more than sit as yard art.

LS Fest West is just around the corner…just saying.

    Quote from the ad……

” I know it needs a good bit of work, depending on your skillset I would say only 3 or 4 days of time and she would be 100% done.”

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

I guess I dont get it. Not my cup of tea but its damn near complete. I guess not being shiny and painted really turns people off.

I hate when someone throws a modern dash in an old vehicle. Part of the draw for me is sitting behind the wheel and admiring the classic style of the dash. If I wanted to sit behind the wheel of something modern, I’d do just that.

That’s actually pretty cool. If you look at IH’s original ads for those trucks, they were the true predecessor to the Chevy Avalanche and today’s 4-dr pick-ups. They were marketed as fifth-wheel RV pullers for families that couldn’t fit in a regular truck. And Cornbinders could pull, too. (And they could pull gas out of the tank like a MF’er, too.)
