Daytona International Speedway Trades Seats for Ferris Wheel?

In a telling move, Daytona International Speedway is removing a section of grandstands at the track to build an “interactive fan area” that includes stuff like a Ferris wheel and restaurant. This is yet another indication that ticket sales are in a serious slump and track operators (in this case NASCAR) are doing anything they can to maintain revenue levels.

We’re guessing that this is yet another move that will upset the core fan base of NASCAR as the racing is now just “part of the experience” as opposed to the sole reason for going to the race. AllHeadlineNews.com ran a short story on the track’s plans that included the graphic in our lead photo for this item.

The area will not be small. The story claims that it will be 136,000 square feet, or basically three acres! We don’t know how many seats they are actually pulling out of the speedway, but on the bright side, parking will be easier to come by.
