This 1968 AMC Rebel SST Convertible Is A Home Built One Of None That Looks Pretty Cool!

This 1968 AMC Rebel SST Convertible Is A Home Built One Of None That Looks Pretty Cool!

This is one of those “what if” cars that someone decided to build and we think it is actually pretty cool. What if AMC decided to build a Rebel SST convertible? Someone in Florida answered that question in a pretty professional  manner with this car. Now, we’re reasonably sure that the “top” is kind of a prop and not an actual functioning piece and unless the frame was beefed and braced up, this thing will be about as floppy as a wet noodle, but damn if we don’t think it looks cool. These cars have aged well and often get mistaken by non-hardcore car guys as Plymouths as their front end is pretty similar to GTX or Road Runner models of the same time period.

The engine is a 343ci V8 so this is not a hot rod by any means but it has nice paint, and according to the ad it is rolling on 20″ Foose wheels so someone has spent some money to keep this thing up and looking nice over the years. The car is super clean from the engine bay photos we can see it is just a unique and cool piece. Admittedly when we first saw the photos we thought, “They made a Rebel convertible?!” It would have been a shot to our fragile ego if we had been living under the false pretense of there never being such a thing before finding out this one is home made. What do you think? Cool? Weird? Would you cruise it? (on sunny days).

Wow…what a terrible ad. This should be used as a example of how to NOT sell your car. Minimal info and very few pics. In the very least, there should be some profile shot of the car. Especially if it’s got some Foose rims, those aren’t really cheap, so you’d think the guy would have a shot showing those. And which ones? Foose has what, around 20? And some look alright and some look outright stupid. It also needs at least one shot with the top up. The way it is folded down does make it look functional, but how are we, the potential buyers, supposed to know if you don’t show it! And if it does function, does it look stupid with the top up? I’d venture a ‘yes’ because there are no pics of it with top up. No matter, it’s 99% guaranteed to leak.

This sounds like it could be really cool, but I can’t make any kind of descision based on that horrible ad. No wonder it ended with 0 bids.

I agree with you Burner303, the ad sucked because of too brief of description and lack of more pictures of the car, including some with the top up.

Sorry guys AMC built these it’s just that you don’t see any around. Rare car and would be a neat cruiser to have something different.

starter guy is correct. AMC DID build a Rebel convertible. As an SST or the cheaper 660 model, My buddy has owned a 660 ragtop for about 20 years now. His is a 1968, was an original 6 cylinder, three-on-tree w/electric OD. It is now a 383 SBC, turbo 400 and Ford 9 inch rear end. Car is original paint yellow with a black bench seat interior. As you have stated, the car is often mistaken for a Mopar.

If “One of a kind” means the only one built the boy is disillusioned. Rebel convertibles might be rare, but since I’ve had 2 of them they ain’t a one off car.
Then again it might be the only one with a power steering pump leak, the top not working, and a chip on the left front.

It’s a nice looking car though. But I’m not looking to make it Rebel Convertible III.
