When we were tipped off to this ad for a 1979 Olds Cutlass that the seller claims has gone 7.89 at 172mph we were interested to check it out. When we discovered that he claims to have run this elapsed time and MPH with a 445ci Olds stroker engine based on a 425 that is topped with a pair of Edelbrock 750 CFM carbs on an Offy intake, our eyebrows arched up a little. Seeing that the hairy Olds mill is backed by a Super Turbine 300 Olds transmission had our brows furrowing and once we did the math to see that with the car’s advertised 28″ tall tire and 4.88 gear ratio, that Olds engine would be turning nearly 10,000 RPM through the traps. We’ve heard of Olds engines turning that hard, except they were the ones used to power Indy cars years ago. Adding to the fun is the fact that the car only has a four point roll bar with downbars that aren’t even close to being in a legal position, no halo bar and no rear downbars. This thing would fold up like a wet napkin if it went turtle at 72mph, let alone 172.
We’re not trying to be unnecessarily harsh here, but the seller is obviously trying to sucker someone into buying this car. We’re sure he has a time slip at the ready with a 7.89 ET and 172mph trap speed. We’re also sure that there is no way in hell this car did it. The good thing is that the seller is asking $55,000 for the car and even PT Barnum himself would have trouble getting anyone to bite on that deal.
Then again, maybe we’re wrong and missing something here. Scroll down to see photos and the link for the ad. What do you think?
BIZARRO DRAG CAR AD LINK: 1979 Olds Ad – IT CAN BE YOURS FOR 55K!
Agreed – I’ll be the blue guy at the track when this thing runs, as I’ll be holding my breath for that sub-8 quarter mile run.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this car struggled to run a 12…
High 11’s; low 12’s.
I’m pretty sure that sweet, riveted on hood scoop would blow off way before 172 mph.
I pull the carpet on my 172 mph sub 8 cars… and no stickers? WTF? How’s it do that with no stickers?
I am so digging the rear wheel offset though. F*ing SWEET!
Oh dear.
What fresh hell has this car come from? I just saw the ultimate in rollbar padding. Is that really the same shit I throw away from my UPS packages? CRAP! I have discarded a funking fortune in rollbar padding!
I think it would be better if somebody glued peanuts to the bar with a hot glue gun.
rule of thumb, guy says his car runs ——– add six seconds!
The chute is only good for covering that embarrassment of a drag car.
Boy you misplace one digit….17.89 @72mph, there happy now!
Exhaust pipe roll bar FTW.
With 50+ years of experience building engines, it’s no wonder his junk makes that much hp with a stock block and dual Edelbrock carbs. Certainly the nitrous shot helped a bit. 🙂
Why wasn’t this turd in Drag Week? The owner could have backed up his claims and sold it after winning Drag Week.
it even comes with an 871 blower ! that explains the price . Hahahaha
“Hoots” words of wisdom! The truth is like the sun: you can shut it out for a while but it aint going away!
Look at the quality chassis work…the promod wing and the nicely welded cage…. who wouldn’t spend the dough…… LMAO
