Event Gallery: 2014 Buick GS Nationals At Beech Bend-Turbos And Torque On Display

Buick has had an on-again, off-again deal with building fast cars. In the Sixties they gave us the Gran Sport lineup, which were A-body Skylarks with all of the engine that Buick could stuff into the engine compartment. In 1970 there was the GSX and the GS Stage 1, powered by 455ci V8’s with enough torque to seriously test the frame rails. Like all manufacturers, they had to cut power down in the early part of the 1970s but even in 1973 you could still get a 455ci Gran Sport Stage 1. They fell off the performance map for a few years, then they took the V6 Regal, added turbocharging and the Grand National was born, ushering in a different kind of performance. These turbocharged V6’s could whip up on V8’s with ease, and they quickly developed a following, culminating in the ASC/McLaren-built GNX. A black Buick was now something to genuinely worry about. Then they fell off for a few more years. For the 1997 Regal, the transverse mounted 3.8L six looked ripe for forced induction, but instead of turbocharging, a blower was bolted on top and the otherwise yawn-inspiring W-body was now grandma’s little sleeper.

All manner of Buicks descended upon Beech Bend this weekend as part of the 2014 GS Nationals. From the car show to the drag strip and the autocross course, the best in tri-shield muscle is ripping it up. Like turbos? There are Grand Nationals as far as the eye can see, including one Grand National-ized El Camino. Like stomping V8s? There’s plenty of Skylarks, GS and GSX out here to satisfy that fix. Like alcohol cars? There’s an alcohol-powered ’89 Regal out here. Take a look through the gallery and see what catches your eye!
