UPDATE: Hot Rod Drag Week – Day One News, Video and Huge Gallery – Topeka, Kansas

The quarter mile combat at Hot Rod Magazine Drag Week presented by Gear Vendors 2011 has officially begun! It was a big day at Heartland Park of Topeka, where the largest field of Drag Week racers in the history of the event took to the track. From the small, but elite field of competitors in the Unlimited category to the throngs of racers in the daily driver class, it was all business on Monday. Chad is on hand and on the wall, all week shooting photos, and Kyle from 1320Video is banging out videofor you to enjoy, all thanks to Gearvendors.

The major news of the day is as follows:

Larry Larson currently leads the top-shelf Unlimited class with a 7.32 second blast. The track was giving all the mega-horsepower cars fits all day with both Larson and Jeff Lutz, driving the “Sick Seconds” Camaro struggling for traction and straight line acceleration. Lutz was the first guy to throw a decent number up with a 7.33. After he did that, Larson softened his program up a bit and ran a just quick enough 7.32. We’re pretty sure Lutz sees Larson in his nightmares. What do you have to do to keep ahead of this guy?!

We mentioned that this is the biggest field ever, there are 177 cars entered. That speaks to the cache this event has attained in the years since that first intrepid band of lunatics tried the five day churn in 2005.

This is the longest, mileage-wise Drag Week ever with one stint being 400 miles from Amarillo, Texas to Tulsa, Oklahoma. According to Chad the competitors are looking at that section of driving with a hairy eyeball and lots plan on making a strong first shot in Texas in order to get on the road early and make the drive in as much daylight as possible.

Gear Vendors is hosting evening racer parties at each of the host hotels. Those parties will be hella fun for the dudes and dudettes not wrenching on their broken junk, and there’s going to be a lot of broken junk! That’s one of the costs of doing the Drag Week business. It is the ultimate test of man and machine!

Finally, we have it from reliable sources that there are already a BUNCH of broken cars, littering the backroads of Kansas. Word is, there are stretches of the drive that have multiple broken cars PER MILE. One dude wrecked today, so that drops the count to 176. It will be very interesting to see how many people make laps tomorrow!

Stay Tuned, this is just starting to get good!

Am I to understand that there are two ’63 Dodges running for the week? Chad, please get some shots of that black ’63! And can you get some details on what the Aussie’s are running under the hood of their ’63?

Also, that LS Pinto is just way too sick. As well, what’s in the rusty Bonneville or Catalina? That thing looks to leave straight.
