Earlier this month the Municipal Council of Wawa, Ontario, Canada approved a plan to hold a drag racing event at the Wawa Airport in 2012. This is a great thing for drag racers and hot rodders in the area and on a larger scale, points to the resurgence of true grass roots racing in the US and Canada. The news comes not long after the East Coast Timing Association made their announcement of a new venue at the airport in Wilmington, Ohio. Hopefully racer, hot rodders, and enthusiasts in other parts of the US and Canada can use stories like this to get events rolling in their own neck of the woods.
According to the story posted by the Wawa News, the race is to be held next August and it will be run under the NHRA sanction. Also, it will be part of a sportsman racing series called, “The Show Me the Money Tour”. Local business people and service people like the firefighters were behind the idea and the local government believes that the race will be good for tourism and boosting local revenues. There are other airports in the area (Northern Ontario Province) that host races like Earlton-Timiskaming Dragway and Elliot Lake Airport Dragway and have been doing so since the mid-1990s.
We post this story hopefully to inspire someone who is pissed that they do not have a local strip to run on or that has to tow hours on end to get to one. If they can get the government on board up in Wawa, you can to!
Are you working on an airport strip or thinking about it? LET US KNOW!

This is how we did our drags this year at our car show but since the gov’t has come in and offered big money to resurface the whole runway and there is a nice little clause about no racing/events of anytype so the future of it is up in the air
