Great Read: Could Ford Pass GM in Sales?

With Ford hauling ass in the sales department recently, Toyota having to recall seemingly every car they’ve ever built, and GM still getting its sea legs back from their bankruptcy, there’s an outside chance that the blue oval clan could catch GM in US sales for 2010. Time will tell, but the gap isn’t as huge as you’d think, and there is clearly more buzz around Ford’s future product offerings than anyone else’s these days.

In a piece we found on Forbes.com, columnist Jerry Flint lays out the situation with respect to the largest players in US auto sales. Toyota was named the largest global seller of cars a year or so ago, but they have yet to crack the grip of GM as king of the US market. With their recent woes, Flint sees no chance of them catching GM in the near future, but he does see Ford as a threat to the General’s seat at the top of the ladder.

Flint claims that Ford is within 200,000 sales of GM. To get to that number he has removed the sales from now dead Pontiac and Saturn, as well as Saab. It would take Ford finding an extra gear in the sales department, which it could find if it lures enough potential Toyota buyers away. Also, GM, while battered and bruised, ain’t dead and they have some brag worthy stuff rolling into showrooms this year.

The title is little more than a bragging right. Back when GM had 60% market share it would have been unthinkable for Ford to make a run at them, but now that 60% has become 20% and Ford is steadily creeping toward 17%.

Hopefully the two drive each other to better quality, better performing, and better looking cars to battle the foreign makes who have been eroding their market share for decades.
