Honda Fined $70 Million For Failing To Report Fatal Accidents

Honda Motor Company was fined $70 million dollars by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) on January 8th, 2015 for failing to report fatalities in their vehicles, the latest hit to the company that has been the epicenter of the Takata airbag recall. The fine is the largest civil penalty ever levied against an automaker and is actually two $35 million dollar fines combined, since that is the maximum an automaker can be fined due to the TREAD act. One fine is for the missing information on deaths and injuries, and the other is for failure to report to the NHTSA. Over an eleven-year period, Honda failed to report 1,729 deaths as required per law. Currently the NHTSA is trying to compile nformation on the accidents that weren’t reported to see if there are trends that could have been used in preventing accidents or further fatalities. Honda made a deal with the Federal government last month, which allows third-party audits of company records and allows for increased regulatory oversight.
