Iron Trap’s Hidden 1938 Ford Convertible Hot Rod: Replacing The Hacked Up Firewall In The 1938 Ford Convertible

In a previous video we shared the 1938 Ford Convertible Hot Rod that the guys at Iron Trap Garage found stashed away in an old garage, gave a first wash, and discovered had a seized engine. But lucky for them, after removing the 389 they have a great option in their recently acquired 331 Caddy engine. And in this video that 331 is going to get a little more room in the old Ford thanks to a new firewall and some custom mods.

You have to think that if there are barn finds of all kinds that still show up today, not all of them are going to just be regular driver cars. What I mean by this is that some of them have to be hot rods too, right? I realize that you’d think most of the hot rods would keep being passed along, but I know I’ve got projects that haven’t seen the light of day in 10 years, so it is conceivable that this same thing could happen to other folks hot rods and that we’ll have barn find hot rods too. And that is exactly what happened with this 1938 Ford Convertible. It hasn’t been on the road since 1973 and is a hot rod that had an engine swap and more.

Video Description:

When we first looked at the 1938 Ford, the big hole in the firewall was a big bummer. Thankfully our good friend Pete had given us two extra 38 firewalls he had in his stash. Matt gets right to work with the @eastwoodco Versa Cut to rough cut the firewall, leaving just the flange to remove. The firewall is spot welded into the cowl and can be difficult to removed whole. Once Steve got all of the flange removed, they get to work fitting the new firewall, trimming little by little to clear the Cadillac. With the firewall out Matt also fixed some damage on the passenger cowl side. Looks so much better!!
