Proposed Social Circle, Georgia, Drag Strip debated at Town Meeting

Proposed Social Circle, Georgia, Drag Strip debated at Town Meeting

A while back we let you know that the town of Social City, Georgia was trying to decide whether or not it would allow a businessman to build an 1/8-mile drag strip on some land that he purchased. Residents had expressed concern about everything from noise complaints to the decline of civilization as they knew it if the track was built. Last Tuesday a town meeting was held to debate the issue and both sides turned out.

Supporters of the project argued the logical benefits of having a drag strip. Mainly, that the town would collect tax revenue on the land, racers would be coming into town and buying things like food and fuel and maybe even hotel rooms, and it would give kids something to do.

Detractors were obviously concerned with the noise, the potential devaluation of their property, and the safety of the track and drag racing in general. In a truly weak move, one resident actually referenced one of the worst drag racing incidents ever, which took place at Yellow River Dragstrip which was located in Covington, Georgia. 12 people were killed in a truly horrific racing accident. This took place in 1969. Seriously, like the 1969 that’s almost 41 years ago. Clearly that resident went trolling for drag racing accidents and came up with that. She should have referenced the nightmare at LeMans from 1955 for additional scare tactics. Unreal.

The Walton Tribune reports that there will be another hearing in February. We’re keeping an eye on this one.
