Land Yacht: The Rolls-Royce Boattail Is A One Off Exercise In Luxury And Styling

Land Yacht: The Rolls-Royce Boattail Is A One Off Exercise In Luxury And Styling

(By Tom Lohnes) – Even if you’re a billionaire, taste in cars isn’t really a natural thing. Whoever wanted this all-new Rolls-Royce Boattail really proved that point.

Based off of a previous-generation Phantom Drophead, the Boattail is a one-off, and that’s where it should say. Between the bolt-upright front end and weird, sloping rear, the boattail is most definitely not pretty. But, it does have some really interesting features, and a few looks towards the future of the ultra-luxe brand.

In the back of the boattail, which is 19 whole feet long, lies two storage containers. The first one is for storing champagne flutes, and the other is a cooler for your drink of choice to go in those flutes. That is an interesting place to put those, because you’d think you would want a drink while you’re being Chauferred in your multi-million-dollar car, but maybe not.

So, what are your thoughts on the boattail? Personally, I don’t love it, but it does preview some design elements of future Rolls-Royce products that actually look great. I wouldn’t exactly be the first to pay $6 million for this thing, but it is definitely an interesting addition to your garage.

I’ll take a ’72 Buick Riv. boat tail over this any day. It seems that all the design teams of today have hit a brick wall and seem to think that ugly is the only way to go.

As with so many other cars today, here’s an otherwise passable vehicle that’s completely ruined by gigantic rims…WHY WHY WHY??? Just watch all the shows: Kindig, FantomWorks, Texas Metal, Iron Resurrection…cool cars, cool restorations, AWFUL wheels…”Hey, how do you like those 29-inchers?!?”
