Michael Schumacher is the most winning Formula One driver of all time and is widely considered one of the greatest racing drivers who ever lived. He hung up his driving shoes in 2006 and left the sport. Rumor has it that he will return in 2010 to drive for Mercedes. Can he still hang on the porch with the big dogs? Has the sport passed him by? Time will tell, but wither way his return is great for the sport.
Schumacher is not just a great driver, but a great brand. He was the first professional athlete to earn a billion dollars. He tree’d Tiger Woods in that feat by four years or better. A story we found on the New York Times website mentions the fact that he sold hundreds of thousands of hats for $30 apiece.
His ability was unmatched in his day, but having been out of the hot seat for several seasons now, can he jump back in an be competitive? Lots of guys have tried and failed to do just that in less technically demanding motorsports. If anyone is the exception to the rule, it’s Schumacher.
We love watching this guy compete, he’s a racer, a billionaire racer, but a racer none the less. During his layoff from F1 he took up racing motorcycles and won the first event he entered. If he signs on with Mercedes, we’ll be paying way more attention to F1 this season. Especially the rain races.
