Site of the Week: Cold War Relics

We met BangShift forum member Dave Dauphinee while attending the LTA land speed racing event in Loring, Maine. Unlike most people that meet us, Dave didn’t run screaming and yelling into the wilderness. Recently, Dave shared with us his website, ColdWarRelics.com. It is a collection of photos and information from Dave’s trips to various Cold War military installations in Maine.

This is truly cool stuff. Dave is braver than us, climbing down into underground Nike missile launch bunkers, and exploring buildings and abandoned places that we’d not have the guts to stick our faces in. Probably our favorite part of the site is the exhaustive research and background information that Dauphinee provides at each location.

Maine was an important part of the US military’s Cold War operations against Russia. Being the closest place to the populated end of USSR, it was home to dozens of Air Force bases, missile sites, and other places of military significance. Long story short, there was some serious firepower lurking in the otherwise quiet woods of Maine.

Hit the link below to see some truly neat stuff and some great historical reporting from Dave Dauphinee.
