Can You Make Real Horsepower With Big Block Peanut Port Heads? Richard Holdener Shows Us How

Peanut port heads, a staple of the early to mid 1990’s big block Chevrolets, were never considered a performance cylinder head. They feature small oval ports that just don’t flow a lot of air. In fairness to GM, they weren’t designed to. They were designed to produce good torque numbers with a relatively small throttle body injection system that needed to also be clean-burning for current emissions standards. But do the peanut port heads flow more than the throttle body induction system is capable of? It turns out that they do. They still aren’t race heads, but if you pull a GEN 5 Big Block out of the wrecking yard and replace the intake and throttle body with a intake and Holley carburetor then you’ll see a pretty marked improvement compared to the factory specs.

But what are they actually capable of? According to this video, Richard has some recipes for power with peanut port heads that can give you 400, or even 500, horsepower. And with great torque numbers, these combos could be just what your 1990s tow rig needs. So instead of thinking you have to completely replace every component in your factory big block, maybe you just need to take some notes from Richard and make a peanut port big block that will move your tow rig with ease.
