When Changing The Engine In Your Odyssey, Keep Your Honda All Honda! (Don’t Mind The Pull-Starter…)

When Changing The Engine In Your Odyssey, Keep Your Honda All Honda! (Don’t Mind The Pull-Starter…)

I’m not the most adherent to the idea of brand loyalty here. In some cases, it makes sense…you aren’t going to stick a Ford 351 into a Plymouth ‘Cuda and you aren’t going to jam in a RB26DETT into a 1967 Mustang, I don’t care what that stupid movie taught you. Some cars you do leave alone. But other cars…well, other cars nobody really cares about and as long as it runs and moves, that’s all that matters. Kind of like the Raven Imperial, for example…that car came dangerously close last year to getting LS-swapped because opportunity presented itself, not that I was actively looking. (Hey, when a 5.3L is ready for harvesting out of an otherwise destroyed truck, that’s a presented opportunity.)

Breathe easy, the resident old Mopar isn’t getting an LS swap. But what about something even more neglected and unloved? How about a first-gen Honda Odyssey? When they run, they are useful as the Rugrat Shuttle, and when they die…well, oh well, on to the next one, right? How about letting the kids go wild with the car they grew up in instead? Let them take the engine out, let them tear it down and see what several hundred miles of school trips, doctor’s visits, trips to Grandmas and other assorted taskings do to the internals. Then let’s see if they can get it back together and running. These guys did. Kind of. Actually, the move is pretty genius…the van runs and drives again AND Dad finally has the excuse to get that new lawn mower he’s been looking at for months…

(Thanks to Wallace for the tip!)

  1. Chevy Hatin' Mad Geordie

    Brilliant comedy!

He had us all believing he’d built the slowest van in the US and at the last moment revealed it was just a joke. But I hope he keeps the van looking totally stock and goes out burning off anything with an LS in it!
