There are three things to remember Tacoma, Washington by. One is the Narrows bridge, the modern replacement to the old “Galloping Gertie” that came crashing down in 1940. One is the…well, aroma… that tends to hover around the Commencement Bay area, especially on warm days. And the final item that stands out in memory after living in the area for over a decade is the Tacoma Dome. I’ve enjoyed many events in the Dome…concerts, a Monster Jam show and trade shows…but I never did see a demolition derby there when I was growing up in the 1990s. Usually, I went to Spanaway Speedway, a figure-eight track that is now tract housing, last I heard. But another place, another time…
Rollover contests…the ultimate test of the cheapest car that the AutoTrader had available, it seemed. Honda CVCCs and Dodge Omnis battling it out for who could roll over more times than the other. I’ve been in a rollover by accident…why anyone would willingly go for the tumble-dry ride in a car is beyond my comprehension, but there’s plenty of folks out there that like to watch the fun take place. I will say that anybody that landed wheels-side up and drove off like nothing happened automatically earns cool points. They get more if they line up for round two in the same car…
