Digging In To China: This Dodge Tow Truck Literally Sank To The Axles In A Muddy Pasture

It’s one thing to go off-roading and get stuck. It’s part of the fun…you and your buddies work to free your four-by-four from whatever impeded forward progress and you move on, no harm, no foul. Sometimes you’ll even test luck to see just how long you can go before you have to break out the tow straps. This isn’t one of those times. This is more like when you get stuck in snow: the timing couldn’t be worse, the chances of you freeing it yourself are slim to near-impossible, and the more work you put in, the worse the situation seems to get. This Ram 4500 wrecker was turning around in a pasture in Texas when it found a soft spot in the ground. Before the driver knew what had happened, that big-ass rear axle had sank into the quagmire of soft-serve-like mud. Two different tow trucks were brought in to attempt to drag out the stricken Ram, but in the end it took double-winching with snatch blocks to dredge the wrecker from the mud, leaving holes in the earth big enough to start a koi pond in.

To anybody with a vehicle stuck in the mud…wet or dry, like this: Just run the cable up from the rear over an 8′ beam or log so it lifts as well as pulls, then down and back a ways to the tow vehicle and expect to use some inertia. 20 minutes to rig, works like a charm, Living in mud a portion of the year I see all kinds including these fools.
