Gasser Video: A Look At The Thriving Period Correct Gasser Scene At Greer Dragway

While lots of drag racing fans like to sit on the internet and try to find a way to bring professional drag racing “to the next level” we’re not into that scene. Why? Because the sport is incredibly healthy and vibrant these days in all of its wonderful forms. From nostalgia drags to small tire racing, regional pro mod series, and more, cool stuff is happening in drag racing. At the peak of coolness mountain is the vintage gasser group that Quain Stott is an overseer of. This isn’t some loosey-goosey deal where some stuff looks legit and other stuff does not. This is hardcore period correctness. How serious are they? These guys don’t allow DECALS newer than the early 1970s in or on their cars. No electronics or “rookie switches” as Stott calls them in this video. The group’s primary home is Greer Dragway in South Carolina. Opened in the late 1950s, the track has survived more than 50 years of changes and evolution in drag racing and it stands as a great local track in an area of the country with a lot of them. The eighth-mile facility is an absolutely perfect setting for the gasser group.

Bret Kepner announced the event to a packed house and by all accounts the action was hot and heavy. Cars like Greg Porter’s “Night Stalker”, Stott’s “Executioner, the Boss 429 powered “Bone Shaker” 1956 Ford, Gene Cromer’s Willys, Howard Moon’s Nova, and a host of others were part of the show. It was an old school, no-holds-barred contest with plenty of drama, jawing, and conflict…just like in the old days. We have been told that Greer was full to capacity and then some to see the cars run and when you see this video, you’ll know why. Hell, people drove from the midwest to watch this deal and we’re pissed we missed it.

Bobby Bennett of CompetitionPlus made the video you’ll watch below at the event and he tipped us off to it. From the high RPM clutch dump launches to Quain Stott’s explanation of the series and its tight rules, this is a great piece of video that really lays out why people are willing to drive 13 hours to watch these guys race. It really is that good.

Great to see those old gassers running again. Our nostalgia racing ( in Australia ) is not as strict with the rules and some of the modern components are being used. I would love to build an authentic early style car and race again. They have always been my favorite class.

That is the way racing should be, when the dial in and the electronics came in I gave it up. If more tracks would do this type of racing I would build another car. It’s not even that much fun to watch the modern cars race, maybe we could pack the stands again or maybe I’m just an old guy who wants to go back HA HA.

This an example of why nostalgia drags rule. We had a chance to meet Quain and see him run at the Meltdown Drags last summer at Byron Dragway. Hell, they even took the car to the cruise night drive in. Awesome

I`m glad to see some one Really Driving and Shifting Gears in some of the BADDEST CARS ON THE PLANET AGAIN!!!!. I Ran Stock, Super Stock, Modified Production, And Gas. I Love Shifting Gears Because The Left Foot Was Made For A Clutch Pedal, not Sitting On The Floor Being Bored. I like the thrill of driving a BUSY CAR And feeling it WORKING as the Gears are Shifted. To Me It doesn`t Get Any Better Other Than Going Faster. Keep Up The Good Work, Safe Racing Always, And Thanks For Helping An “Old Drag Racer” Keep Some “GOOSE BUMPS”!!!

I have always loved the gasser cars and always remember my daddy talking about them and 4 speed cars. yes the rules are tight but not unbelievable. The Falcon wagon is my car and it’s the most fun I have had in many years building this car and driving it. I built this car in 4 weekend my self with my dad helping me along the way as he likes to say holding the dumb end or handing me tools. I have more work to do to it but it will be enjoyment. They are a handful to drive and not for the faint hearted. nothing like the sound of a high revving 8,000 rpm plus stick shift car and you go back in time. I know it’s fun to me but the best thing is my old man enjoys it even more I think.
