Gasser Video Perfection – 10 Minutes With The Ohio Outlaw AA/Gassers – Kick Ass Cars Putting On A Kick Ass Show

As it gets cold here in New England and I already crave some of the summer months back, videos like this absolutely awesome gasser film keep me warm and hopeful for next year’s drag racing season. What we have here is a 10-minute adventure with the Ohio Outlaw AA/Gassers at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio. This footage was taken during their legendary “Night of Fire” event that continues to be the largest single day, self produced drag racing event in the country and probably the world. Chad and I saw these guys run at the NHRA Holley National Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green, Kentucky this summer and they put on a heck of a show. The cars are built largely to the standards of the late 1960s “outlaw” gasser circuits back when guys made a living touring the country and running at tracks far and wide almost every night of the week. Because these cars are largely “period” they run heads up on the eighth mile. Why? They aren’t certified to the speeds they would be capable of running all the way out the back door.

This group has something else going for it outside of the cool cars, too. Everyone has a backup chick, every car has a bitchin’ 1960s era name, paint, and attitude. People were going ape BLEEP for these guys at Bowling Green and take a look at the crowd in the video! Norwalk was packed to the rafters and these guys delivered. Over the course of the 10 minutes we get treated to a truly boss two minute opening to surf style rock and roll that basically introduces us to the cars and sets the scene. After the 2:00 mark, the guitar is gone, replaced by the sounds of blown hemi and big block wedge engines packed into small cars, just like back in the day. There are wheelstands, crossed up burnouts, and some sweet side by side racing.

Friend-o-BangShift Dawn Mazi-Hovsepian made this film and she has been making top shelf drag videos for a couple of years now. Having grown up at the strip with her siblings, mom, and hard charging dad, she knows the attitude, cars, and energy at the track like few others. This is some of her finest work. You don’t want to do crappy work right now, you want to zone out for 10 minutes ad gorge your eyes and brain on some primo vintage drag racing iron. That’s what this video is all about, so pull the damned trigger below and let’s get on with it!

The cars ? Oh man … THOSE cars !!!

The sound ? Oh baby … THAT sound !!!

The back up girls ? Errrr … other than ‘ Phenomenon’s ‘ ( who was drop dead gorgeous )…. errr .. in dire need of ‘ Age Appropriate ‘ clothing .. eeesh !

But yeah [ 66 Fairlane ) … isn’t it more than just a bit telling that an event like this can fill the grandstands whereas the average NHRA National event these days can barely manage 50% capacity ?

    There’s a lesson to be learned here NHRA … hope y’all are listening/watching/reading 😉

This is it man… This is why the sands were full during the Gasser / Cam wars in the 60’s

Scary part is that some of these Gasser groups will do it for free or for a very small appearance fee. Especially compared to some of the booking fees for a Promod or even an alky FC show…

I was there on the fence, and the place went bananas when the green Anglia went to the 1000′ on the burnout. It was awesome!

And all this was held on a 1/8th mile track!
I would pay for a full weekend pass at a 1/4th mile!!

Mix this up with fuel alts and throw in a couple of jet dragsters for a half time show and most places I know would sell out.

Now that’s drag racing! Its all about the show and there is nothing cookie cutter about those cars! When are they heading to NC!
