Morning Symphony: The 1970 Ferrari 512S Pininfarina Modulo – The Prototype Lives!

Morning Symphony: The 1970 Ferrari 512S Pininfarina Modulo – The Prototype Lives!

The chassis is the 23rd Ferrari 512s Can-Am racing car, the body is Pininfarina cut loose with no restrictions whatsoever, and the result was one of the wildest wedge-shaped cars to ever come to life in the flesh. There are precious few “anything goes” cars in the world and the 1970 Ferrari 512S Pininfarina Modulo is one such machine. Originally painted black with white panels, the car was repainted white with black panels later on. But paint was the least notable thing on the Modulo…one look is all you need. If you were to look down on top of the Modulo, you’d see an single-bladed ax head shape, fat at the back and thin at the front. The passenger compartment is covered by a canopy that slides forward for entrance. It was a runner, and an immediate hit with the press and public.

A couple of years ago, Jim Glickenhaus managed to acquire ownership of the Modulo and got the beast running and even street-legal, if that one-off New York license plate has anything to say about it. When Paolo Martin of Pininfarina sketched up the Modulo, we highly doubt that he ever envisioned the car to be wearing license plates! This is footage from the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este event in Cernobbio, Italy, a highly-regarded show that saw the appearance of the Lancia Stratos Zero last year. Makes you wonder what will appear for next year, doesn’t it?

Well that’s suitably INSANE. You have to like that it’s a real, running car and about the craziest looking car I’ve ever seen with license plates. WOW! (the choice of a 512 Can-Am chassis and engine is pretty cool too)

This car reminds me of some Sci-Fi movies I’ve seen. They had one off cars that were supposed to be futuristic. This car fits the bill.

That thing has a great exhaust note, and an idle that wouldn’t be out of place in the staging lanes of an racetrack in the country.

All it needs is a front air dam and it would look a LOT better, that undercut looks like it would get airborne just trying to get onto a highway much less at any serious speed. Wish they would run the damn thing, I want to see it do some fast laps on a track… hate when they baby a car, even something as rare as this… drive it damnit!
