Satellite Launch: Digging A Long-Dead Plymouth Out Of It’s Grave!

Have you ever looked at a page like Cars in Barns or the many Instagram pages of forlorn, abandoned old machines and wondered just how much work really would need to go and bring that beast to life? Over the course of the last couple of years, as I’ve been on my kick of people bringing old iron back to life, we’ve seen a lot of cars get brought back to the living, but lots of them have proven to be out in the open, ready to roll, and just needed to be sorted out and mechanically checked before they came to life.

Kevin (JunkyardDigs) and Luke (ThunderHead 289) have been telling me about this particular project for a while now. The car itself is a 1970 Plymouth Sport Satellite two-door hardtop…not a Road Runner, not a GTX, but it’s the same, a Chrysler B-body, so in truth it doesn’t matter, it’s one worth saving. This one is a 318 2-barrel with a three-on-the-tree manual transmission, and it’s been down for the count since…well, if you’re counting tree rings on what you have to cut down to even open the door, it’s been down for a hell of a long time, probably longer than either one of these two have been alive. I’m guessing, anyways.

Reviving this Satellite is going to be a massive undertaking. In fact, this will be a multi-part series that starts here, with an ax, a saw, some shovels and some sincere luck. With Luke being a Ford fan, Kevin not being a fan of anything sourced in Iowa due to well-founded rust concerns, and this poor Plymouth is well-beyond sunk into the ground. The first step on getting the car from dead to alive involves getting this car out of it’s current spot without the car ripping in half in the process. Can it be done? These two have enough practice, but this Plymouth might be the biggest test of their skills to date!
