Hey, why are you rolling your eyes? I’m not ashamed to admit that I enjoy catching Days of Thunder now and then when it shows up on TV somewhere. There have not been that many modern big budget racing movies worth a damn and Days of Thunder isn’t exactly the greatest thing Hollywood ever barfed up, but Robert Duval playing a fictional version of Harry Hyde is fantastic. This scene is my favorite part of the movie and it shows Cole Trickle being “shown the ropes” by other racers, his crew, and everyone else he runs into while trying to figure out how to drive a stock  car.

This is where you’ll hear the famous lines about telling the driver to go out and crash into the pace car, not letting the driver pit because the crew was eating ice cream, and generally wincing and making cracks at all the rookie mistakes the driver is making. Backing it all up is the classic Spencer Davis Group song “Gimme Some Lovin” and the whole thing works together to make four minutes of fantastic film.
