Step 3, Repair: Street Machine Gets To Work On Fixing Their 1JZ-Powered Volvo

Step 3, Repair: Street Machine Gets To Work On Fixing Their 1JZ-Powered Volvo

Plenty of people love a good Volvo. I’m one of them…I can appreciate a good 240-series brick, it’s the first car I ever did a worthy burnout in, the first car that taught me the dark art of turning the rear tires into clouds. Good times, great memories, but if there was one criticism I could have about that car (besides it’s honey mustard yellow color) it was that the original engine was a touch gutless. A Toyota 1JZ inline six with a power snail attached would cure the gutless part of the equation, wouldn’t it? That’s what Scotty’s “Trolvo” is all about, but during it’s showing at Summernats a while back, the Trolvo proved to have some issues. Nothing too dramatic, but the kind of issues that keep the driver from having maximum fun.

Two major things need to be addressed with the turbo Toyota brick: the transmission is a Toyota automatic and isn’t playing along quite like it should, with some gears not coming into specification, and when the transmission does behave, the Volvo is a one-tire-fire machine. One tire burning it down in Austraila? That’s half-assing the job! So follow along as Scotty installs the Made in the U.S.A. Aussie Locker, and after draining out about two gallons of chocolate syrup out of the case, it’s time to get into the transmission. Follow along as work in the shop commences!

I’m not a certified mechanic, but wouldn’t lowering down the car on the hoist save the fellow from using a ladder to reach into the engine bay?
