The Marcos: Take A Closer Look At A Low-Slung British Rarity!

In the library of Sedgwick Junior High there were a catalog of four books that I’m pretty sure I was the only kid to check out in at least a decade. I can’t remember the names of the books, but they were a catalog of every car manufactured for 1969-1973 in volume. And they were complete works, with truly every car manufactured in each year, from every corner of the Earth. Leave it to me then, I was really only focused on the American cars, so I would see the more pedestrian models of the Chevelle and learned more about cars like the AMC Ambassador that happened to be in the yard at the moment. But those books opened my eyes to cars that I would have never seen otherwise. They were my first points of reference for cars like the Opel Kadett and the Sunbeam Tiger, and I distinctly remember taking great pause with the Marcos GT.

The shape is what got my attention first. The Marcos was sleek, low-slung, and yet when you looked at the engines that were available, back then I perceived the Marcos as a kind of economical and sleek sports car. Then again, I expected the car to be about one-half bigger than it actually is. Using plenty of parts-bin raiding…Volvo and Ford engines, parts from Triumph, and elsewhere, the Marcos was without a doubt a cottage-industry car, but damn was it pretty. I was expecting to see the Marcos for the first time and to see a car the size of a C2 Corvette or a Datsun Z-car. The Marcos is considerably smaller than that. But there is a bright side…One of the designers was a six-foot-four man, so unless you play basketball for a living, you’ll fit!

    Datsun Z cars aren’t exactly big, either! That thing looks like it’s tinier than a Triumph Spitfire. Gorgeous styling, too.

    Wasn’t the chassis of the original marcos made of plywood. Apparently brilliant but nobody bought it so they changed to steet (space frame i think) so they would sell.
