Vintage Video: A 1987 Drag Documentary Looks At Kenny Bernstein And The Budweiser Crew – Neat Stuff!

My first memories of really being a fan of drag racing become clear about the time I was seven. That was 1987, the same year that a German film crew made this short documentary about Kenny Bernstein and his Budweiser team, which was having one of the most singularly dominating NHRA seasons in the sport’s history. 1987 was the year that Bernstein ran the famous “Batmobile” Buick body that the NHRA approved and then banned after the 1987 season. The team won 7 of the 14 series races and was in the final round of 10 of the 14 NHRA contests that year. This after killing ’em all in 1985 and 1986. Bernstein was the dude behind the wheel and Dale Armstrong was the guy making all the horsepower and innovating new stuff every other day.

This video is cool because we see good crew action, learn about the early implementation of computers on the cars, and see plenty of 1980s vintage racing footage. There are a few spots where a German voice over comes through, but nothing that’ll make you shut it off. Ray Alley and Bernstein are the two main speakers in the video. Our favorite part? We see Dale Armstrong lapping the valves! Seriously! An NHRA crew chief getting dirty and actually doing stuff and that “stuff” is lapping the friggin’ valves in a nitro Hemi head. How boss is that?!

A great time to follow drag racing during it’s transition into the computer era. Filmed at the 1987 Winston World Finals…at that race there was near 40 cars trying to qualify in Top Fuel and about that much in Funny Car.
