Watch A 1960s Vintage Triumph Drag Bike Try To Launch Its Rider Onto The Strip

The first time I ever spoke to EJ Potter we were having a discussion about drag racing motorcycles in the 1960s. EJ said that there wasn’t a lot of love for two wheel competitors back then. In fact, his exact quote was, “Motorcycles were things that guys thought made bad noises, flipped over backwards, and screwed up racing for the day.” It cracked me up and made for a memorable quote. This video captures the noise and nearly flipping over part too.

You’ll see a rider on a truly bitchin’ and period perfect looking 1960s Triumph drag bike at the strip in Eddyville, Iowa. The bare bones little bike is sporting sporting a wire wheel up front, a super skinny rear tire and a frame that appears to weight about 15lbs. This is bare bones stripped down drag bike goodness. The little Triumph engine sound healthy enough as the driver does a burnout and heads to the starting line. Shockingly, it dead hooks the little rear tire and stands up almost vertically, with the rider hanging on for life. The dude settles the little hellion down and legs the bike out the back door of the eighth mile track. A little more altitude and this rider would have totally gone turtle!

Old drag bikes are really cool…for other people to ride. Not us, thanks.

Press play to see an angry little Triumph bike hammer on the strip!
