If there’s a group of motorsports enthusiasts crazier than the wheel driven contingent it is the boat guys. The machines are incredible but they are also astronomically expensive to buy, maintain, and operate. Hell, watching someone fuel a boat up is almost enough to make bystanders wallets dive into the ocean before being tasked with paying the bill. The allure of these boats? The same as the allure of hot rodded cars. Speed, noise, and the ability to line ’em up and see who is either the better driver or who is packing more horsepower. Of course these guys are doing with with multiple engines that are often more and 1,000hp a piece.

The boat featured in this clip is a 48′ MTI built craft that is powered by TWIN 1,350hp Mercury Marine engines. These are 540ci V8s with turbos and the really cool thing about them is that they’re clean sheet designs from Mercury. Overhead cams, four valves per cylinder, and lots of other technology is packed into these big monsters and the payoff is 1,350hp wide open literally all day long. The potential badness that comes from an engine failure at sea means that companies like Mercury Marine spend years and years on R&D for projects like this and that R&D is some of the most torturous testing you can imagine. The want the engines to get their owners back to shore safely and they test them to the ends of their ability to prove that!

So, in this footage the big 48′ power boat certainly is not cranking at full throttle but it is zipping along pretty good. As there are multiple camera angles involved, this was a stunt that was obviously setup but it is still cool to watch despite the planned nature of it. The giant boat comes across the wake of the yacht and makes a couple of small jumps before it hits a big swell and REALLY takes off. The nose is starting to climb as the hull catches air and then the whole works lands back first (where the weight of the engines is) and the driver motors on down the river. This doesn’t seem like the smartest thing to do with a boat that is worth deep into the hundreds of thousands of dollars but then again, if you can afford to own it you can afford to jump the sweet bejeezus out of it as well.

For the record, we’d be watching from the yacht….or from a dinghy next to the yacht.
