Watch Top Fuel Pilot TJ Zizzo Drive The Insano Hypermax Diesel Dragster To Its First 200mph Lap!

TJ Zizzo is a well known and well respected NHRA Top Fuel racer from the greater Chicago area. The guys at Hypermax Engineering, a business that is based around high performance diesel engines are also from the Chicago area and they just so happen to have one of the wildest diesel drag racing cars in the world. Zizzo and Hypermax recently joined forces and the results, which you’ll see on video below were fantastic. The diesel dragster ran 7.12/200mph, which isn’t the fastest ever, but it was the first time the guys crested the two century mark and that makes this car one of (we believe) less than five diesels to ever accomplish the feat.

This is not B-series Cummins, Duramax, or Powerstroke powered rail. Nope, the Hypermax dudes use an engine based around an International DT466. It is a monster motor that is found in millions of medium and heavy duty trucks around the country. The Hypermax version has multiple humongous turbos, a billy bad ass fuel system, and enough torque to pull a small country into the ocean.

Watching this monster spool those turbos and then leave is pretty mind boggling. We wish we knew the incremental times because it sure seems like this thing gets to 60′ in less than a second, which is heady territory. The weight of the engine and the fact that the chassis needs to be larger and heavier to support it, along with the need for more forward gears to keep the engine in its operating range make running this car an exercise in defying logic, but we love the guys for doing it.

We’re betting that Zizzo had a big smile on his face the whole time, too!

Heavy trucks actually use a larger engine than the IH DT466 which is a measly 466c.i. The Cat C15 is 928c.i. the 3406 is 893. Cummins ISX is 915 the old N series is 855 and Detroit Diesel 16liter is 864 while the 60 series is 775. Heck there were larger engines than 466 in drag week cars.
