The World Fuel Altered Nationals are a yearly part of the program at the famous Eddyville Raceway Park in Oksaloosa, Iowa. Eddyville is a really fast eighth mile strip and this race is a big one for them every year. They draw some heavy duty AA/FAs and a great crowd to watch the out of control behavior that they bring along with them. In this video we’re treated to a horrifying ride on top of a AA/FA that ends with the car careening into a corn field, but luckily no one is hurt and the car doesn’t appear to be too torn up. The driver in the car is Anthony Whitfield and his comment of, “Lucky!” on Facebook is pretty accurate although I would add that he did a great job of doing everything possible to get this machine stopped before disaster struck.
As you’ll see, the car makes a typically awesome AA/FA run hunting around the lane and fighting Whitfield to go any which way but straight. At the end of the track, Whitfield throw the ‘chute out but absolutely nothing happens. From that point on, you’ll see him working his ass off to slow the car down and prevent it from flipping, crashing, or hitting a wall. As it bounces and careens toward the end of the course, Whitfield aims it between the walls and jumps it off the end of the racing surface and headlong into a cornfield. The car harvests A BUNCH of corn before coming to a stop. We’re guessing that Whitfield had to dig himself out of the cockpit! Wait until you see how much corn is all hemmed up in the front of the car, driver’s area and everywhere else.
This is a study in courage under fire, driving under duress, and farming with nitromethane. Long story short, this video is one you’ll watch about 15 times!

Speaking as a highway engineer, and that corn performed better than any impact attenuator I’ve seen.
