One of the neatest groups of cars at the 2014 Grand National Roadster Show was this group of historic, retro, and just plan cool drag race cars. Some of these cars are new builds done in the old style, others are period race cars, and a few of them don’t do well to fit any type of mold so we’re not even going to try. The coolest car in the group (in our opinion) is the Muffler Magic fuel altered that was once driven by Jim Miles and became the most famous photo subject in drag racing history when it blew the entire bottom end out of the engine in front of a cadre of photogs in the late 1960s. The snaps of Miles looking down in an apparent effort to discern what was happening as the crank is literally falling out of the engine is one of the enduring images of wretched excess in drag racing history. It is violence personified and most people mistakenly think that the car was white because the old photos are on B&W film. As you’ll see below…not so much.
There are dragsters, altered wheelbase cars, and gassers in this group. There’s not a dud in the bunch. While the Grand National Roadtser Show is far more a “hot rod” show than a “race car” show, we think it is very cool that show organizers set aside space for groupings of cars like these in the gallery below and others like the awesome Bonneville: A Century of Speed group that was the greatest assemblage of land speed cars outside of the salt in forever. Literally.
