Only In Australia: A Mid-Engined Kei Truck Spinning Tires To No Tomorrow

The “bongo truck”…that’s not what it is actually called, but my nickname for these things. Marketed as a Ford, Mitsubishi, Kia, and a whole host of Middle East and Asian kit manufactures like AutoZam, the basis for this homely little cracker box is the Mazda Bongo. They are mid-engined beasts, pack four cylinders and double-digit horsepower ratings, and are as comfortable as a Bulgarian prison. They’re also pretty much everywhere in some of the more exotic countries I’ve visited, and I’ve had the misfortune of having to drive one of these things around. It is amazing how much better a Nissan Frontier looks after wheeling around a Bongo, but that’s another story for another time. Right now the story is on this particular one, which has been jammed full of V8 engine and cut loose onto an Australian burnout pad. With no weight over the rear tires to speak of and plenty of power on tap for the Micro Machine, getting a good quality smoke show is actually kind of difficult, since the trucklet just wants to skid all over the place instead of heating the tires up. Click play below and check out the closest thing to seeing a V8-powered Power Wheels do work in the burnout box:
