IndyCar racers have our respect and have long owned it. Why? What they do is dangerous. The cars are super fast and the courses are unforgiving. We’re friendly with Graham Rahal and he’s one of the most well known drivers in the series these days. It was hit co-worker and fellow racer Robert Wickens who suffered one of the most violent and scary looking IndyCar crashes we have seen in years just a few days back at Pocono Raceway. The Lucas Oil car basically used the DHL machine as a ramp after the two racers touched, launched into the catch fence and then began pinwheeling down the course with the car reduced to nothing but the cigar shaped center tub that protects the driver and engine/driveline. Wickens did not walk away.
Suffering various orthopedic injures like broken ankles, various other broken bones, and as it has come to light, a spinal/back problem that doctors will operate on at some point this week. The fact that he lived through this is a testament to the construction and standards of modern Indy car racing.
We do not have enough talent to hold this guy’s helmet. You’ll hear the announcers talk candidly to the fact that it seemed the racers were going way too hard, way too fast at the start of the race. This turn two disaster was on one of the first trips around Pocono these drivers made in competition.
We’ll keep you updated on Wickens condition which has been pretty guarded since the moment that this event took place. We understand and respect that and will wait for word as his treatment and healing process kicks off.
