Engine Autopsy: Here’s A Look Inside The Ill-Fated DeBoss Garage 16-Cylinder Detroit Diesel

About a week ago we showed you the DeBoss Garage video of the guys buying a junkyard Detroit Diesel V16 engine, getting it running, and then blowing the sucker up for fun. It was going to be crushed anyway so it was not that big a loss in terms of mechanical violence, but the story does not end there. See, the guys dragged this thing home and made another video, taking the engine apart and exploring its interesting layout, technology, and engineering. This is that video and dare we say, it is way better than the first one.

The Detroit Diesel engine was and in some ways IS a marvel of engine technology. Taking advantage of available mechanical thought of its day and then innovating as well, the mills have things like common rail injection, a modular design, and of course, legendary toughness to run in nearly any situation.

If you like these engines but are not expert level in their layout or their mechanical blueprint, this video is for you. If you ARE an expert in these engines this video is for you as well because the host takes his time to go over lots of the details and other stuff that made this monster tick for all the years it was among the living.

Like any good teardown, there are surprises and interesting things found. Like any good tour, there are explanations knowledge imparted on the viewer. We particularly liked how he demonstrated the way to fix an injector that was getting hung up and not responding to the “commands” of the rack.

Dave Beard gets the hat tip for telling us about this one. A truly cool watch!

I ran a Hough 500 Rubber tire dozer years ago.It had a 17′ wide blade. It had one of these engines in it. 140 Gal of fuel in 8 hours of steady pushing. And Mr. Deboss has a very good channel on YouTube. He is very good at what he does. And his vids are easy to watch. RIP big” D”.
