BangShift Question Of The Day: Just How Far Would You Go For A From-The-Factory Custom?

BangShift Question Of The Day: Just How Far Would You Go For A From-The-Factory Custom?

Do you yearn for the days where you could go into a dealership, tick boxes off on a sheet, and wind up with the car you wanted, exactly as you wanted it? Those days are gone…now it’s a package deal. You buy the Entertainment package, the Handling package, the “I need 800 electronic aids so that I don’t drive this bastard into the bay” package, et cetera. It’s rare that you can do any pinpoint choosing anymore, but now you can go the “bespoke” route. You can, if your heart desires, pick out your own exterior colors, interior trimmings, wheel finishes and so on and so forth. You can be as neat and tidy or as gaudy as you want…so long as your check clears, everything is fine.

After messing around with the builder for the upcoming C8 Corvette, the car in the lead photo is how I’d have one if I were to choose: Zeus Bronze, Z51 package, the luxury touring-style seats in a two-tone natural-colored tone, and the engine sans cover, with the dress-up kit applied. Done and done. But there’s an option that I didn’t see on the configurator that you can actually opt in for if, and only if, you’ve got $5,000 in your pocket and you just hate the idea of having any kind of money near you. One of the upcoming Corvette’s options is the ability to customize your vehicle’s VIN number. Yes, you read that right: for five grand, you can buy into having your own personal VIN number…at least, you can influence the last five digits of the VIN. There are restrictions, of course, otherwise half of the jort-wearing dads would try to order a VIN with the “00001” serial number, but it’s something that can be done.

Of all of the things I’d want, a personalized VIN is the last thing I’d go for. I’d like to be able to pick and choose individual options and I’d really like to be able to mess with the options available on a whole platform, not just one model. That way, opting in for a 2020 Dodge Charger Scat Pack 392 painted the Emerald Green sold in 1994 with a six-speed from the Challenger wouldn’t be a pipe dream. But that’s me…what about you? How far would you realistically go if you could?

I have to agree with having a Charger with a 6 speed. Even if they only sold a few thousand a year, having that option would have me at the dealership.

I want a truck. A Basic 3/4 ton truck. Rubber mats, bench seat, towing ,A/C and cruise. If you want cruise control in a Ford it is only available in a 1000 dollar option package. I would order a new truck today if I could get it my way, instead I am cruising the internet looking for the perfect fuel injected work truck from rust free area’s of the country…
