BangShift Question Of The Day: Would You Rather Drive A Fuel Altered, A Pro Mod, Or A Nostalgia Funny Car?

BangShift Question Of The Day: Would You Rather Drive A Fuel Altered, A Pro Mod, Or A Nostalgia Funny Car?

How about this for a question that should divide the world in three camps! So if I were the king of drag racing, or at least a guy who had piles of money and the ability to spend it in any way that I wanted, I would own all three of these things. I would have a AA/FA, a blown pro mod, and a nitro burning nostalgia nitro funny car. Unfortunately for you fair reader, I am forcing you to choose which ONE of these things you would most want to drive. All three is not an acceptable answer.

Being that all three of these machines are capable of running semi-close times and tracks already run pro mod versus AA/FA shootouts, it would be sweet to have a battle royale between all three of the most evil, crazy, and entertaining drag racing classes we can think of. Pro Mods have come an exceptionally long way from the days of them being over grown top sportsman cars. We saw plenty of runs into the 5.80s out of the great field in Bakersfield. The AA/FA class is divided into a couple of groups. We dig the nostalgia style cars like the Rat Trap and Winged Express, but for purposes of this discussion, lets say we’re talking an AA/FA like those that run with the Texas association. They are more comparable to the other two classes than the likes of the classics we saw at The Patch. Saying that, I’d also add that despite them being more “modern” they have the wheelbase of a shopping cart, power like you read about, and the same snarling attitude all of their predecessors have had. Lastly there are the nostalgia funny cars. These seem to be springing forth from the Earth on farms. There were nearly 40 of them vying for 16 spots at the race. Mind blowing. Guys running deep into the 5.70s and one car touched the 5.60s over the course of the weekend. The BangShift sponsored “Crusher” Camaro driven by Todd Paton got sideways on the hit and crossed the track, nearly clipping the tree! Yowza! The floppers are a tough customer in the driving department as well, so you’d need some real stones to strap into any of these three whips.

SO….prepare your answer!

Nostalgia Funny car, be my first choice, then pro mod, I really like both, but people have aways heard me say I want a nostalgia funny more then a pro mod, even if its a funny car to run 7.0pro

  2. Bryan Hall

Fuel Altered for sure!!! Doesn’t get any better.. It seamed they got the short end of the stick this weekend

  3. Grumpy

I was going to say none of the above but strictly going on a comfort level (strapped into an enclosed cage) I’d choose the AA/FA car even with the short wheelbase.

The first car I ever saw run at Lion’s in 1965, was the Wing Express. is there any other choice. AA/FA Forever

Fuel Altered! Years ago I went to Frank Hawleys Drag School in Gainsville and drove a mild 454 altered of his. It was a great experience that I never forgot.

  6. Dragsterbus

Hmm tough question as these are my three favourites ( after my own car) but probably a 69 challenger funny car with a lace , kandy ,flake , panel, varigated leaf etc paint job 🙂

  7. Old School Fuel Altereds

I would love to drive a Fuel Altered. The NHRA Heritage should match race these cars at all of the events. They really put on a great show last weekend at California Hot Rod Reunion.

Kudos to the group that was there!

Based on the cost, parts (a little more forgiving on parts/ not quite as much breakage), the fact that i have crewed on one, probably pro mod, however I grew up around drag strips and with the love of funny cars but as i get older i really dig the fuel altereds. If money was never an object, I would own and share driving duties on all three, fuel altered, pro mod and a nostalgia funny car 🙂 Chad, that was a tough question!

  9. Wing Nut

Definitely Fuel Altered. These cars have so much character and wild factor that it’s just sick. They were really the icing on the cake last weekend.

See ya at The 2014 March Meet!

Awful Awful / Altered . I’ve loved them since I was a kid. Also love Gray Baskervilles name for them.

    Fuel Altered!

Seeing the Fuel Altereds at Famoso makes me wonder if they are making a come back.

Nostalgia Funny Cars today look like current F/C with old bodies. Its a joke.
Fuel Altereds you just stab and steer. How often do they run the same 2X in a row!
ProMod, now they are cool! Especially a Willys ProMod!

I know I am not a normal fan since I have driven 2 of the 3. My love is the funnycars, after all that is what I cut my teeth on. On the other hand the AA/FA’s are wicked…..period!! But I have yet to drive the pro-mod so I will go with that one. Anyone out there want to give me that chance????
