What in the wide wide world of sports is going on here? Creativity is going on here, that’s what. Richard Holdener went to visit a guy that did a complete 3.0L 2JZ Swap on his WIFE’s 1960 Nash Rambler. But he had no interest in figuring out or tuning EFI, so he decided to put a carburetor on it. Or a couple of them to be honest. Yep, three two barrels in fact. But how about the ignition system? These use the EFI system to control spark and have a sensor in them, not a distributor.
Well that’s where things get really creative. The owner, Jerry, started taking the 2J apart and found that the engine doesn’t just use a crank trigger to control the ignition, but rather a cam sensor that slides in like a distributor. It’s got a shaft with a gear on it and spins to let the ECU know what is going on when. So Jerry decided he could use a Dodge Slant-Six distributor if he machined it down just a bit and put a different gear on it. You know, like the gear that is already on the factory cam position sensor. Once the new distributor setup was done, he cut the factory intake, added a log style common plenum, and bolted three two-barrel Holley’s on it. I love it.
And it doesn’t look janky. This thing is nice. It’s a nice car that his wife drive’s regularly, and that they have driven all over the country on road trips. It has the original 1960, dealer installed, air conditioning and is now run by the 2JZ’s compressor. It’s all backed by a 700r4 with a lockup converter and an 8 inch Ford rear with a limited slip and 3.42 gears. The damn thing gets 27-30 mpg on the highway!
Watch the video. Jerry is cool, and the car is cooler.
nice!!!! he did not put an LS engine in it.
