Rough Start: A Cheap Way Into A 1964 Chevy

The 1964 Chevrolet full-size cars are an icon of sorts. They have classic good looks from the factory, the Impala SS cars were stout runners, and about every possible version of this car has been given hydraulic suspension and Daytons for a rap video. Finding an unmolested ’64 Chevy that isn’t a basket case, full restoration or a lowrider is nearly impossible. But they still exist, like this ’64 Bel Air 2-door post for sale in St. Joseph, Missouri. The buy in price is a little higher than most of my Rough Start choices at $3200, but since the whole budget is $5,000, how could you pass it up? The car looks mostly complete, with just a missing bit of trim here and there. The interior looks fresh (what look like late-model seats are the giveaway) and the 350/Powerglide combination looks straightforward, if basic. This is a great starter car for someone who wants to get into the hobby.

While a transmission upgrade is probably necessary to get this car to be happy on the Interstate, it would make a killer around-town cruiser. I’d make sure the 350 was happy, then start hunting for trim and enjoy some sunset drives with the windows down, listening to glasspacks make all sorts of music. Or you could play some Dr. Dre. Your call.
