Last week we found a rare Pontiac for sale on eBay and this week it is one for the Ford crowd. This totally bitchin Mercury is supposedly just one of 54 built with “R” code  427 engines and of those 54 several of them went to NASCAR teams and were probably wrecked, chopped up, glued back together, and wrecked into oblivion again. What we really love about this one is that it is not restored. There’s rot and a few ventilation holes in the trunk and floor, the interior is kind of tough looking, and the paint needs to be completely repaired, but they are only complete and original once. It had to have taken a cooler than average Mercury buyer to walk into a dealer and demand the right boxes to be checked for this car to be built. Of course we know that Mercury had a racing presence in the middle 1960s, but this is still one truly unique big car.

The seller claims that the engine has been rebuilt and run in for about a half hour. They bored the thing .015, stuck a slightly hotter than stock Isky cam in it, replaced the valve seats with hardened pieces, and added stainless valves to the heads. The engine’s stock steel crank and rods were reused in the build, so that factory DNA continues to live, even inside the mill.

You know that we love big cars with big honking engines and this one fits the bill. All the better that it is a Merc instead of a Ford, too! Yeah, it needs work, but who wouldn’t relish the task of bringing this big bruiser back to better than new condition. We know that we would! Bidding starts at $35,000. Anyone got $34,750 we can borrow?
