Epic Gallery: 1994 Popular Hot Rodding Nationals – Pinnacle Of Pro Street Perfection!

(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – One week after picking up my new apple red, 1994 S-10 extended-cab I had already de-badged it, put lowering blocks in the rear, and done a couple other custom touches before setting out from Montgomery to visit the PHR show being held in Marietta, GA.  The weather was not overly inviting as thundershowers and dark clouds were present for the duration.  Still, the attendance was high and it seemed most folks had a good time.

There was a burnout contest each day which I believe was won by the same 2nd-gen camaro both days.  The owner claimed to have a former cup car motor in it and judging by the rpms I’d not doubt it. One of the Bigfoot ride trucks was there slinging mud around a small arena.  The one thing that stuck out the most to me was the sheer number of Pro Street cars present.  The premiere stuff you saw the most in the magazines wasn’t there (Dobbertin, Hay, Grimes, Sullivan, etc), but quality cars filled the show none-the-less.  It seemed nearly everything had yard-wide rubber and some scoop poking out of the hood.  Most of them would regularly fire up and parade around the venue then again find a spot to park and watch the others follow suit.  The wildest of the cars I saw was this blown, Boss-powered fastback Mustang running an offset distributor drive and an injector hat (Ed note: Alan Root Hemi perfection!).  The valve covers seemed to run from fender to fender.  The car sounded awesome and loped around the parade ground smoothly.  I wonder if it or any of the others ever actually made a pass at the track.
