Event Gallery: The Kontinentals 9th Annual Day of the Drag Race – Vintage Rods on the Strip!

Charles Wickam recently attended the 9th annual Kontinentals Car Club Day of the Drag Race held at historic Little River Dragway outside of Temple, Texas. The historic strip, which opened in 1959, is the perfect venue for this event which was open to rods, customs, and race cars from 1964 down. The event was a smashing success and Charles did a great job of capturing the action on the ancient strip and in the pits.

The track was born in 1959 when interstate highway construction came through the area and made what was then Route 95 a redundant road. The original builders of the track bought a parcel with the road on it, put up barriers, and started running drag races. Apparently the track still has a hook to the left that was a turn of the old highway!

Events like this that cater to the traditional rodding crowd seem to be popping up in new places every year. This event is one of the foundation events, coming up on 10 years in existence. Judging by the turnout of awesome cars both showing and racing, the future for the “Day of the Drag Race” is bright.
