Today’s world of blobby funny cars is the result of the march of technology and competition over the decades. It is almost impossible for the casual drag racing fan to believe that there were funny cars that actually looked like production vehicles back in the good ol’ days. Among the most rare of these factory representative beasts were the handful of American Motors AMX bodies that were created in the late 1960s. AMC dedicated most of their motorsports resources to the high banks of NASCAR and Trans Am during that era, but a few bucks escaped from an open window to fund the creation of just a couple funny car bodies. This is one of them.
This body was raced originally by Ron Ellis and then a little later by Ron and Steve Boggs, who are legends in the ranks of injected fuel dragsters. The chassis under the car is a more modern piece from the 1970s that has been updated and certified to modern standards. Currently the car is being run with a blown small block Chevy and Powerglide transmission. It runs 7.50s in this trim. While it would be cool to see it powered by an AMC engine, it is a funny car, so the power plant and transmission don’t define it near as much as the body does.
The car is being sold as a roller for $20,000. We haven’ t bought a funny car lately so we’re not sure how that fits into the market. We’d love for someone to scoop it up and either put it back into 1969 form or to go all the way and build a legal nostalgia nitro machine out of it. How bad ass would be to see an AMX flopper lined up next to a vintage Camaro or Mopar bodied machine? Answer: WAY BITCHIN’!

This car is way cool! The shot of the car in it’s original paint leaving the line is awesome. What makes this extra cool is that it was always a Funny Car, not a Fuel Alterd with an AMX body on it like the AMX-1 car was. And that car looked great as a red, white and blue flopper. I totally agree with you, someone needs buy this and run it again. Though I think a Javelin with it’s longer wheel base might be better suited for a nitro car. This AMX would make a killer 7.0 Pro or NE1 car. I wish some “dare to be cooler than the next guy” racer would make a nostalgia flopper with an AMC body on it. You said it, that would be…WAY BITCHIN! Keep those AMC’s coming.
