Classic YouTube: Chuck “Malibu” Aaron Flying The Red Bull MBB Bo 105 Stunt Helicopter – No Heli Should Be Able To Do These Stunts!

What you will see here is so far out of the normal for a helicopter and helicopter pilot that it is almost beyond belief. The pilot is Chuck Aaron, call sign “Malibu”, and he is one of only three people in the world…and the only person in the United States…to be licensed to perform aerobatic stunts in a helicopter. His machine, a modified Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm Bo 105, might not be the prettiest helicopter you’ve ever seen, but what it lacks in visual beauty the twin-engined, solid rotor helo makes up for in maneuverability the likes of which defy explanation. Simply put, a helicopter should not be able to loop and very, very few are able to roll. The Bo 105’s solid titanium rotor head is key to allowing the rotorcraft to be flown like Aaron does: unlike other helicopters, whose individual rotor blades have a wide range of motion, the Bo 105’s blades can only move via pitch…every other movement moves the rotor disc as a whole. This means that whether the aircraft is accelerating, climbing, or flopping around in the air at Aaron’s whims, the rotor disc is in the same spot in relation to the airframe.

In my time in helicopters, I’ve done short-field stops that require the helicopter to point nearly vertical as speed is scrubbed and I’ve done autorotations, the kind that will scare the hell out of the uninitiated. What Chuck Aaron is capable of doing would freak out even the best pilots I know of. You should not be able to look out through your roof panels, through the rotor blades, and see ground approaching. That’s normally the start of a really bad day, but Aaron makes it a thing of beauty. Click play to see what I mean:

Awesome flying! I got to fly in 105’s many times as a passenger when I was in the Canadian Coast Guard (since retired). Just glad our pilots never had the need to try some of the stunts! We considered it a flying pickup, as it could hold a lot of supplies and equipment in the back, through its clam shell opening rear doors. I was sort of rough riding when compared to our previous Bell LongRanger, and I was glad when we reverted to one later. It was more like a taxi. Fun days, and getting paid for it!
