Snowmobile-Powered Triumph: Mating The Engine To The Car And Maybe A Test Drive

Honestly, we weren’t expecting you to take to this project as well as you did! It sounded like pure heresy: take a Triumph Spitfire, gut the original running gear out of it, and re-power the machine using the engine from a Yamaha RX1 snowmobile. Sounds perfectly sane, right? It sounds more like I had a nightmare while napping, while trying to break a fever. That’s some automotive creativity that borders on the insane…but then look at the people who are putting this project together and remember, they’ve built a Power Wheels Jeep into a dune-runner and a Power Wheels Mustang into a drift machine.

Replacing the 1.1L four-banger with the 998cc engine from the RX-1 was a benefit for the Triumph. With an aftermarket supercharger kit, the Triumph is getting double the horsepower right off of the hit out of a late-model engine. There’s a lot of work that’s required to mate this powertrain into the little roadster, but the goal is to get the car started and maybe, just maybe, it’ll drive. Maybe.
