Watch An Early Mustang Convertible Dominate A British Production Stock Car Race In 1975 – Completely Hilarious

Watch An Early Mustang Convertible Dominate A British Production Stock Car Race In 1975 – Completely Hilarious

We’ve gotten this link sent to us a bunch of times and we finally have some space to jam the video up today and you are going to love it. Filmed in England back in 1975, the race is basically a championship event of what we’d call “spectator drags” here at stock car tracks in the USA. By that we mean that these are street legal cars that people drove to the track and raced just as they rolled in. For instance, the car that sprints to an early lead and dominates the event is a stock looking Mustang convertible. There’s no roll bar, the driver isn’t wearing a helmet, and the top is down for all the world to see. The track looks like a short one, probably a quarter mile or so in length and the field of cars is super diverse. There are minis, Escorts, a Japanese car of some sort, a Hillman, a freaking Rolls Royce, and the capper is a giant Chevy Impala! The bad part is that the Impala doesn’t even last a full lap after the green flag flies. This is the definition of a free-for-all.

The racing is tight and there are plenty of thrills and chills. As in the road racing video the other day, the commentary delivered by the announcer is exceptionally fun. When the big Impala gets up into the fence his pained, “Oh dear…oh dear…” is great. What’s most interesting here is that all of the car in the race qualified by running at events throughout the year. The major difference is that through the year they weren’t racing other guys, just running single time trial style runs. The cars in this race were all track champions from various raceways in England at the time and this was the first time that they were all put on the same course at the same time and turned loose. The results are entertainment of the highest value.

As the announcer says, “These are ordinary production cars, straight from the car park!” You’re going to love this –

Hmm, the video I watched has the Opel dominating the race. I don’t know how 3rd place (and 4th for a while) for the Mustang can be considered “dominating”. He would have been much further back too if he didn’t block all those Minis from passing. Definitely entertaining though, especially when the Toyota spun out – followed by some awesome racing in reverse, and ending with a “Rockford” turn to get back on track in the right direction!

On another note, is that the same Rolls now racing in the 24 hour of Lemons?

Looks like something from Monte Python’s Flying Circus. Even the announcer sounds like Eric Idle.

    Convertibles racing with no helmets.
