War on Racetracks: Social Circle, Georgia, Citizens Group Gearing Up To Kill a Drag Strip

The “Concerned Citizens of Social Circle” Georgia, otherwise known as the villagers with flaming torches, are ramping up their efforts to defeat a proposed drag strip project in their community. They’ve vowed to “flood” the city with people saying no to the project, even though their protest group consists of 50 people. They have also found a lawyer to take their case if necessary for the low fee of a $5,000 per month retainer.

In an interesting and humorous bit of information, the group brought in a state official from the Department of Natural Resources. It seems that their goal was to use this official as a witness to testify that the project would cause all sorts of animal life to be displaced, including a certain type of fish. The state official told them that the project would have no worse effect that if someone were to build a home on an undevelopmed piece of land. That kind of cracked us up. One “expert witness” down. We’re sure they have another lined up for the next sewing circle meeting.

One member of the group is quoted in a Walton Tribune story as saying, “When you get the community together like this, that is what you need.” Apparently, getting the “community together” means gathering 50 poeple who share the same hysterical veiws and misconceptions about this project as they do.
